Eric Dorn is originally from Kansas, but was stationed in Fort Carson Colorado in 1996. It was there that he became interested in turning wood. Having visited a Wood Shop with the idea of making a coffee table for the girl he was dating (who is now his wife). He became addicted to wood and all its possibilities.
He started turning small urns and vessels using a variety of different woods then gradually moved on to bowls. After they moved to Texas in 1999, he found mesquite wood to be an excellent choice for turning large wood bowls. Besides being one of the hardest and heaviest woods, it has a striking pattern in grain and a deep dark finish.
His turned birdhouses came about due to his strong fascination with nature, its unique beauty and natural flow. The natural shape of a tree limb inspired me to turn my first birdhouse. I continue to experiment with different woods and am constantly intrigued by all the possibilities.
